When you first think about home improvements, most people start on the inside of the home. Depending on the reasoning behind the home improvements, you made want to start on the exterior painting and decorating and work towards the interior. Why? Well if you are looking at putting your house on the market to sell, then curb appeal or drive up appeal is important. You don’t want to get potential buyers to the drive way only to have them turn around and leave.

So what are some items you can do to help improve the exterior of your home? Well you can start by keeping the lawn cut and clean. Start with the flower beds, remove old mulch and add new mulch, get rid of the dead flowers, remove weeds, and you might need to add some color to the front of your home. These things are important as well, even if you aren’t moving or selling. Clean flower beds, and fresh trimmed cut lawns, give the house a boost of beauty, especially in the spring and summer when flowers are blooming and the grass is green.

Next, take a look at the exterior of the home itself. If you have wood siding on your home or wood and brick, replace any rotten wood or damaged wood. Then, you should consider painting and decorating. Worn out paint and colors that are faded, bring down the over all appeal of a home. Give it a fresh outlook and maybe even paint it a bright or lighter color. Or you may even consider redoing the exterior finish with vinyl siding. This maybe a little expensive, but it will more than pay for itself in a few years because you don’t have to paint any more. You can even have the soffit and fascia of your home redone to offset the siding color or accent it.

Continue to look around the exterior of your home, what else could use some refreshing or improving. Maybe adding paving stones for a walk way from your drive to your front entrance, is something you are considering. These are a nice little way to add some appeal. If you have a deck or patio, check for rotten wood, or see if your deck needs to be resealed. If you have a cement patio, seal the cracks, and people even paint cement these days, and you maybe able to add some extra color to your home. Also, if you have steps or stairs to the deck or patio or up a front porch or back porch, always remember to check the hand railing. Loose rails can be hazardous and you wouldn’t want anyone to fall. It pays to be careful.
